The 6th International Conference on Social Sciences

KUALA LUMPUR,
19th September 2019 - The 6th International Conference on Social Sciences was a collaborative effort between Faculty of Human Ecology, University Putra Malaysia and the International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM), Sri Lanka. The other partners in this colloboration was the co-hosting partner Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Noida International University, India; The Islamia University of Bahawalpur, Pakistan; University of Sarghoda, Pakistan as the academic partners and the Institute of Social Sciences, India as the strategic partner. It was held on the 19th -20th September 2019 at the Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The Dean of the Faculty of Human Ecology, Prof Dr Ahmad Hariza Hashim, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of UPM gave an opening speech to welcome the speakers and the participants. The aim of the conference was to bridge the gap between researchers and knowledge seekers by providing a common platform to address key issues that require attention concerning humanity like climate change, globalization and community development. The theme of the conference “Empowered Humanity: Making Knowledge, Innovation and Progress Accessible to All” is very important in the current global situation where human society is confronted with many issues. Hence, social science research in empowering humanity must ensure that knowledge and innovation is accessible for all, including the deprived and marginalised, from developed to least developed economies; thus achieving the goals of SDG where no one is left behind. About 20 speakers presented their papers in parallel sessions and plenary session.

Among the plenary speakers were Dr Roslan Rosnon of the Department of Social and Development Sciences who spoke about “Negotiated or Forced Development: The Fate of Orang Asli in Peninsular Malaysia”. Prof Asnarulkhadi Abu Samah, Director of Institute for Social Science Studies was one of the panelist for Panel Discussion on “Community Empowerment through Research and Innovation” moderated by Prof Dr Steven Ratuva from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand who was also the Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee.
